Farmers Market

I am interested in how Britomart becomes a controlled public environment through the events that take place there.

Please join my blog and post any images, videos and comments you have on an event, function or experience you have had with Britomart. You could either be a user of the space, a worker, tourist, someone who was part of the organisation of an event or involved in the design of this space. I want to hear your thoughts on Britomart.

Anthony McCall

Representing time as space. McCall plotted durations–ranging from five seconds to twelve years–by means of a simple horizontal line. Black dots denoted the relative density of the attending audience. At five seconds and one, five, and even thirty minutes, the group forms a definable circle with all individuals apparently focused on the event. Brandan Joseph. http://reproach.wordpress.com

The form of attention is a function of the form of attending

social experiment

At 1pm I went and stood next to my box of apples, offering one to each passer by. Again, only a few were taken. I was ignored and sniggered at, the opposite to last night. In response to other events that take place on this site, such as the Farmers Market, it is hard not question that someone will buy an apple at the farmers market on a Saturday morning, but will not take one for free?

what happend- event two

Today I went back to my site at 12pm to give out even more (115) NZ royal gala apples. I decided to leave the box of apples on its own, to see how the public would react. Only 6 apples were taken in one hour.

what happend- event one

I gave away 72 NZ royal Gala apples for free on Tuesday at 7.30pm. All the apples were taken within one hour twenty five minutes. This was a steady and relaxing process where the public was happy to participate in my event. You can watch my video for details on how I performed this.

Street Performance Licence

Britomart is NOT in the Auckland City Council street performance locations. Therefore you must seek special permission from www.britomart.org
Britomart and the Auckland City Council both seem to like the idea of creatives in the city...

"Street performance makes an important contribution to the cultural life and vitality of our city." Auckland City Council

"BRITOMART IS A PLACE THAT HAS SOUL, WHERE THE PEOPLE ARE BOLD AND THE CULTURE IS COOL." Britomart.org

FREE APPLES AT BRITOMART

Please join me for free apples at Britomart. Tuesday evening and Wednesday lunchtime.
The 'event' will aim to explore ides around

* what 'types' of people will except something for free in a open space
* how program can influence peoples movements without architecture
* if program can bring people to a site or make them aware of the space they are in
* if there is a difference between daytime and night time inhabitants (spatially)

Wind Drawing

The charcoal drawings indicate wind intensity and direction on the Britomart site. These examples were taken from the same point on site but recorded when different events have taken place.

Here are the stats on how many people are entering the Britomart site over two hour periods. Each reading is done with program in mind

Images Required

I am interested in how Britomart becomes a controlled public environment through the events that take place there; how program starts to control atmosphere in a space but never will completely.
