Program Three

Smoking Pavilion

The site that defines space through program. The site is activated by mechanised seats that only extrude if the next seat is occupied. The result is a highly controlled smokers pavilion forming a community construction of all different uses of the Britomart. The number of occupants using the program determines the scale of the space.

Program Two

Interrupting Space
The two walls created from air will transform space and social conditions within the site over 12 hour intervals. In response to my event I was interested in how we try to control different social conditions on a public site. As the inhabitant passes through the site their presence will be interrupted by the moving air curtains, allowing the inhabitant to respond to changing threshold.

Recording Device

The device is sectioned through Britomarts pathway and the train station below. I am interested in how the recording of the above and below ground can offer spatial recordings. The device reacts to the wind above ground, which activates two surfaces below ground to produce a recording of sound. The sound is played above ground offering a social atmospheric condition from the climatic atmospheric condition.

Farmers Market

I am interested in how Britomart becomes a controlled public environment through the events that take place there.

At 1pm I went and stood next to my box of apples, offering one to each passer by. Again, only a few were taken. I was ignored and sniggered at, the opposite to last night. In response to other events that take place on this site, such as the Farmers Market, it is hard not question that someone will buy an apple at the farmers market on a Saturday morning, but will not take one for free?

Today I went back to my site at 12pm to give out even more (115) NZ royal gala apples. I decided to leave the box of apples on its own, to see how the public would react. Only 6 apples were taken in one hour.

I gave away 72 NZ royal Gala apples for free on Tuesday at 7.30pm. All the apples were taken within one hour twenty five minutes. This was a steady and relaxing process where the public was happy to participate in my event. You can watch my video for details on how I performed this.

Britomart is NOT in the Auckland City Council street performance locations. Therefore you must seek special permission from www.britomart.org

Please join me for free apples at Britomart. Tuesday evening and Wednesday lunchtime.

The 'event' will aim to explore ides around

* what 'types' of people will except something for free in a open space
* how program can influence peoples movements without architecture
* if program can bring people to a site or make them aware of the space they are in
* if there is a difference between daytime and night time inhabitants (spatially)
